What does this jammy, spicy bottle of Morgon have to do with a Liverpudlian singer and 90s TV show host? A Beaujolais wine review for you…
Cilla Black is a scouse legend.
When I was growing up in the mid 90s, you just watched Blind Date after Gladiators and Baywatch, then Family Fortunes, and that was that.
“I wish ya a lorra lorra luck,” she’d say to poker-faced contestants, clearly disappointed in their choice of Nigel from Llandudno or Sheila from Ipswich.
Surprise Surprise was her other show, which would arrange, yep, you guessed it, surprises for unsuspecting members of the British public.
Usually, they’d be reunited with a friend or family member from years ago.
Like little Jimmy who used to play out with them in the street but disappeared one day, never to be seen again – turns out he was having a boss life in Australia and didn’t miss them at all.
You get the gist, anyway.
And so to this week’s review: Morgon, Beaujolais
Beaujolais is usually a bottle for a sunny day and a salad-y type lunch.
You know the ones – M&S antipasti, a few dips and those mini cream-cheese stuffed peppers (name me a better edible thing – I’ll wait).
But this isn’t.
It’s rich and jammy. Robust and spicy. You get bubblegum and kirsch kinda aromas when you swirl it in the glass – deliberate flavours that are byproducts of a winemaking process called carbonic maceration. State of me, knowing that!
And that came as a – tenuous link incoming – pleasant surprise!
Morgon, the area where it’s produced, sits on volcanic soil, which gives it a real deep intensity and earthy texture.
Oh, and it’s a ‘Cru’ as well – one of 10 in Beaujolais and the second largest. Cru denotes recognised quality and if you ever see that on a bottle then it should be a good’n.
Anyway, I’d definitely recommend grabbing a few bottles when you can.
