What does a Boneless Banquet have to do with a Chilean Shiraz wine review? 

It was a crispy Sunday, stodge was required and I wanted a KFC…

I’d heard they’d just started doing Boneless Banquets: Boneless chicken strips, popcorn chicken, a side of choice (always gravy) and chips.

Oh aye, I thought, sounds like a birra me that. So in I went, it I bought and down I sat, rummaging through.

“They haven’t put my chips in,” I said.

“Go and tell them,” me mate replied.

I stood up and went to the desk.

“Hiya,” I said to the Deputy Assistant Manager, who sounded like Paul O’Grady and looked nothing like him.

“Hiya, you OK?”

“Yeah, just that you haven’t put my chips in.”

“Ok, let’s have a look,” he said, reaching for the bag.

I was reluctant to hand it over. But I assumed people pulled this chip stunt regularly and so a visual check had become part of KFC protocol against white collar crime.

He shook his head.

“Gina! GINA!” he shouted, to someone called Gina in the back, “you aven’ purr’any chipssss IN ‘IS BOXSSSS!”

Anyway, Gina did me a fresh batch in the end. Hot crispy fellas. My first Boneless Banquet experience went from a near miss to an unprecedented stodgy success.

Point is, we expect stuff to be as it should.

So if you want a reasonably-priced shiraz that’s everything a shiraz should be – dry, spicy and full-bodied – get this bottle.

It’s cheaper than a Boneless Banquet. And they haven’t left the chips out.

A wine you’d expect to be as it should. Unlike my KFC.

Dense and dark, full bodied with peppery spice, bit of vanilla in there as well to add another silky smooth layer.

I had it with a medium-rare ribeye with blue Stilton sauce. And, yeah. Boss.
