What does this gorgeous bottle from Puglia have to do with a famous TV ad from the 80s about milk? My Primitivo wine review reveals all!
I used to live in Accrington, the town made famous by two young scousers, milk and Ian Rush.
But if people asked where I lived, I’d say ‘oh about 40 mins from Manchester’, for fear of the above intro being repeated back to me like I’d never heard it before, or an Alan Partridge-esque melt pestering me to repeat it in my Liverpool accent so he could turn unnecessarily hysterical.
One night, after a couple of beers in the town centre, me and a few lads fancied a Maccies.
But the main restaurant (feels weird calling Maccies a restaurant, happy to be corrected there) was closed, with only the Drive-Thru open for business.
And they wouldn’t let us order without being in a car.
So what do you do?
You call Max Taxis, that’s what you do.
“Where to, lads?”
“Just thru the Drive-Thru please, mate.”
“And where after?”
“Nowhere, not going home yet, just the Drive-Thru.”
“Ok, jump in.”
I’d argue that was possibly the best four quid I’ve ever split four ways.
Primitivo – perfect with penne all’arrabbiata
If you read my reviews, you’ll notice I spent a little more than usual on this wine recommendation.
But sometimes, paying extra is worth it. As demonstrated by our midnight Maccies run.
🍇 Grape: Primitivo
🇮🇹 Origin: Puglia, Italy
🇬🇧 Supermarket: Booths (soz if there isn’t one by you)
💷 Price: £8.29 (15% off)
This one is inky and intense, rustic but rounded with that touch of black fruit sweetness you’d expect from a wine soaked in Tuscan sunshine. It’s wonderful with a tomato-based pasta dish.
And it’s up there in my top 10 wines this year.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5
